Wise Words

I have been thinking about what to share with you as I continue to homeschool the children this year. Our school year is going a bit different than I expected. Although the children enjoy Classical Conversations I’m not sure it is what I had hoped it would be. We will continue going next session, but I will be doing things differently as the year continues. I am now teaching the children five days a week for two – three hours a day.

We are still using Explode the Code books (and loving them)!

We are still using The Story of the World for History. The children have memorized almost 100 facts of the timeline of history. It is wonderful to see their little faces light up as I read about a place we have studied and practiced finding on a map. They love using maps and learning about places they have heard about in the bible as well.

Here is a wonderful resource to learn more about Christian History!

I am reading Grandpa’s Box to them out loud daily (which I am giving away this week on our family blog).

Here is a wonderful resource for free audio books online - click here.

We are doing art twice a week using the books I have shared before – the children love drawing things they know that start with the five basic shapes. I’ll post pictures of their art work again soon.

Math - we are using Kumon workbooks just for repetition of what I am teaching them – we are working on times tables at the moment. They have them memorized up to 15x15 but I want them to know how to do that – so I spend 20-30 minutes during our math time showing them how multiplication is just addition. I use blocks, toys, etc and I draw it out on the chalk board.

They will continue to do science labs at Classical Conversations this year. Not sure what I will do for that next year. I have plenty of time to figure that out. I’ve found out I’m not big on any gross experiment! I also found out that my science geekiness is still very much there and I love to learn more about His creation!!!! It amazes me!

Music – the children take private piano and voice lessons in our home. I teach them music theory and spend time ensuring they understand how to read music properly, etc. On our family blog the other day I posted photos of them learning how to play drums. I was photographing it – not teaching it :) The instructor brought them to work on rhythm and timing. They loved it and did great for the first time playing an instrument not easy to master!

I am working on teaching the boys how to read and helping the girls grow in this area. They love to read daily and spend time in the word alone! Now tell me that doesn’t warm a Mommy’s heart!?

One of the classrooms we use for CC at a local church has these wise words above the chalkboard. I’m going to make posters of them and put them above and around ours.

These are truly words to live by! Click on photos to see larger.

The first one is God’s Standard

Pledge to the Bible:

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, and will hide its words in my heart, that I might not sin against God.

We are working on having this memorized! There is no greater allegiance to desire than one with God!

This is a simple and yet powerful pray to teach your children to begin saying at tender ages. I pray our children will always start each day with these two prayers on their lips! That they will always remain humble before God and desire His way and will for their lives no matter what the day brings.

May I obey, with a good attitude right away, all the way, everyday! Thank You Father, for giving us Your Son to enable us by Your grace to live in a way that is well pleasing to You! May my heart always be ready to serve You in joy!
