Our Focus This Month…

IMG_9437

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, " I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."  John 8:12

Each week the children and I are going through the stories leading up to His birth – from the prophecy of His coming in the Old Testament to the retelling of it from the New Testament.   The children have watched A King is Born by Nest Entertainment and many other stories that teach about His life.

Our focus is His being the light of the world and how His light shines in us and through us when we obey Him.

We are going through our A-Z bible verses again and right now we are up to “D”.  Phil 2:14 “Do all things without complaining or arguing.”

The greatest gift is hearing them over the past few weeks using the verses we have learned during times of strife between them…when one child is not sharing or another maybe hit the other.  Out of their mouths pours life and light -

A soft answer turns away wrath.” Proverbs 15:1

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9

Children obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.”  Colossians 3:20

And now I am hearing Philippians 2:14 leave their lips as well.

You see raising godly children comes from our desire as parents to obey God first – lead by example the ways in which they should go…that it will be well in their souls, walking by faith on His paths for them!

Little by little they are beginning to understand the power of the Holy Spirit living in them and how they choose to obey or not.  How they choose to disregard what Jesus has done for them during the day or live by His grace!  Empowered by His Spirit!

This month is a great opportunity to talk about Jesus and how He is the reason we all live and breath.  How because of Him we can rest in His faithfulness to will and to do in us His good works for His good pleasure!   How because of His obedience to God – we too have victory over sin and can walk in all that He did with joy!

I put the verses on 3 x 5 cards and one side has the bible address, the other has the verse.  Then each week I test them by showing only one of the card and asking where it is in the bible or what verse goes to the address.  We do a review of each verse previously learned during the week and keep going over them to ensure His word is truly hidden in their hearts.  They also watch the Steve Green DVD’s Hide’em in their Hearts which has almost all of the A-Z verses in the set of 2 DVD’s.  All of the children love watching the DVD’s and singing along!

Our goal is to teach our children to be doers of His word – not just hearers and memorizers.  Knowledge without wisdom truly is a waste and can never bring glory to God.  We are training them to serve one another, to care about others before themselves and focus on God's power to will and do all that He desires of them.  To be more like Jesus each day - who came to serve!  Training our children to desire to do all things unto Him is a daily choice to:

“Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.”  Philippians 2:14-16

I remind myself of these wise words spoken to the people of Philippi by Paul – that all the time, energy and constant training I do with our children is NOT in vain – it is for the glory of the Lord!

“Even a child is known by his deeds, whether what he does is pure and right.”  Proverbs 20:11

Is the verse they will learn next week and how perfect to follow-up after Paul’s teachings – that they are known by the choices they make and others will either see the bright light of Jesus shining in them or a dim light no different than the world.

May God’s word spur us all on to choose His ways and allow Him full access of our hearts and homes!  May our school days be Jesus centered and every lesson we teach be an example of doing all things without complaining!   May our children learn from us that it is possible to count it all joy and praise God for knowing what we need and giving us only what is needed in every area of our lives!  To Him be all the glory forever and ever!  AMEN!

How do you bring Christ into your daily lives and homeschooling?

A give-away will be coming next week to help share the glorious stories of the bible with your children!

  1. Loved this Jill!!

It reminds me of what we talked about yesterday...

I also love the idea of putting the verses on note cards - I will be doing this with Aspen from here on out as I feel this will truly help her do MORE than just memorize each scripture outloud. Another thing we enjoy doing as a family is taking the bible verse we learned and putting it into art work! We each do our own version of what the verse means by using paint, markers, glitter, glue, gems, etc!! So much fun and it really 'paints a picture' of the scripture for all of us to see!

    Love and hugs!!
