Teen Talk Tuesday - Modesty

This past month of Teen Talk Tuesday was such a blessing to me. It's been an honor to come together with fellow believers in order to honor God through our words. I pray that you were impacted by our discussion on purity and have passed it onto your friends and loved ones.

Our topic for this month is modesty. Like purity, modesty is a true reflection of your heart. When we honor God by our dress, we are displaying our desire to please Him. Let's start out by looking at what God's word has to say about modesty:

"likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness - with good works." 1 Timothy 2: 9-10

Based on this passage, why does God expect us to present ourselves in a respectable manner? As believers in Jesus Christ, we are a testimony to who God is. When we fail to represent Christ in a holy manner (by our dress, our words, and our actions), non-believers are empowered to continue to deny Christ. When we honor God, non-believers are able to recognize the holiness of God through our actions.

You have the power, through your actions, to cause people to stumble in their walk with Christ.

Not only are we to be a light within this dark world, we are also called to edify our brothers in Christ. When we fail to dress with a modest heart, we cause our brothers to stumble. Men are visual beings, therefore they are impacted by the way women portray themselves in dress. Let us cause our brothers in Christ to adore us for our hearts, not for our bodies.

"Do not let your adorning be external - the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear - but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious." 1 Peter 3: 3-4

"Modest is Hottest" is the way the girls in our youth group like to title their goal of modesty. They know that God is pleased by their desire to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to Him (Romans 12:1).

Unfortunately, the pull of the world is strong. Everywhere you turn, outward beauty is portrayed by "model looks", short-shorts, low-cut tops, and "less is more". Let's take a look at the reality of what the world expects from you:

Did you notice the 2 young girls walking under the billboard at the end? Unfortunately, the world has told them that this is who they have to be; an unrealistic, photo-shopped portrayal of an average woman.

The truth is that we are each fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). All that God expects from us is a modest heart that overflows into a modest lifestyle. Let us remember that each day we present ourselves to a Holy God. He expects greatness from us, to hold ourselves to higher standards, and to start living lifestyles that are worthy to be called Christians (Philippians 1:27).

Each summer we take our youth to a camp in the mountains of North Carolina. Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters is a high adventure, bible based camp for teens. Each year they have a breakout session entitled "Modest is Hottest" (where our girls get it from!). If you have iTunes, I would highly recommend checking out their Podcasts, specifically number 18 (Modest is Hottest).

Once again, I'm praying for each of you reading this today. Whether you be parents or teens, I pray that the love of Christ has impacted your life and that we could all make a commitment to live whole-heartedly for Him!

Thank you Christie for sharing this with us today!   I look forward to hearing our readers thoughts on this topic too!
