Yesterday I shared my personal experience since changing our diet and how my body is adjusting. Actually, all of us are starting to feel different and going through our own levels of detox. Why are we detoxing? Well, instead of me writing out all that happens when your body is overloaded with grains, carbohydrates, and sugar – I’m going to share the following posts with you. I hope you will invest the time to read all that I have been sharing, to keep learning how important it is to eliminate all foods that cause inflammation in the body.

I love this graphic and wish we could truly see the state of our internal organs on a daily basis. Because I truly believe if we could, we would be way more inclined to treat it better. But because we can’t and ignore all the signs and symptoms it is giving us throughout our lives – we abuse it by eating S.A.D. and whatever is easy and convenient. Sadly, we don’t make a change until we are faced with a major health event. Sometimes that change can be too late and other times it is a wake up call to begin treating your body with the TLC it deserves.
Your body doesn’t need difficult to digest foods (some of which I wouldn’t even consider edible)! Nor does it desire to eat processed foods all day long, overloaded with unhealthy fats, chemicals, and an excess of salt and sugar. We have an amazingly complex digestive system and it needs to be treated as such. That means giving it foods that will not cause the body to go into defend and protect mode. It means eating foods that don’t cause you to feel bloated, tired, hungry 20 minutes later (which high carbs diets do because they have zero nutritional value other than setting off the pancreas to produce more insulin which sets off a whole host of negative reactions in the body – namely inflammation), or foods that constantly give you a 10 minute energy boost.
Our family motto around food is this and has been now for 10 years!

The foods you choose to eat should be fresh, organic, and full of vital nutrients the body needs on a daily basis!
Here are some points about the stages of detoxing I shared a few years ago – keep these in mind as you go through the initial change in your diet.
The first wave of cleansing is usually the worst. Headaches, dizziness, nausea, bad breath, glazed eyes and a heavily coated tongue are signs of the first stage of cleansing. Hunger can be the most intense in this period as your body is craving or should I say demanding more carbs.
Yes, the furry white tongue is a strong indicator that your body is fully embracing the detox. Your mouth is a haven for toxins and it’s said that it is the window into your body (i.e. your health).
Many Chinese herbalists use the tongue as a way of diagnosing internal problems and they are incredibly accurate with their diagnosis. A white furry tongue that is coated thicker towards the back can indicate toxins in the large colon and that is fine because that is exactly what you are aiming to eradicate.
Many tend to continue with a cleanse until their tongue returns again to a healthy pink,which can often take 20 days or more. Thus, pushing through the beginning stages is so important when regaining your health is the goal!
You may also find that your breath smells less than sweet during the cleanse but avoid chewing gum as it’s on the ‘no go’ list for any cleanse. Chewing gum encourages your digestive system to remain on alert as your stomach is expecting you to swallow after you’ve chewed – which your body doesn’t need to do more of each day! Organic mint tea can help with not so pleasant breath, which is a result of the toxins you’re accumulating in your mouth and internally breathing out.
If you haven’t yet started the diet change and are interested in what the Chinese herbalists look for when they diagnose via your tongue, check out this tongue questionnaire - you may be surprised at the accuracy of it. If you have started your detox already then the results will be different as your tongue coating is reflecting your bodies current detox state and not an underlying problem.
To help rid your mouth of the excess toxins and bacteria - use a tongue scrapper and rinse with salt water, gargle with 50/50 water and hydrogen peroxide(brushing with this can also help keep your mouth feeling clean, while helping to strengthen your gums) or use a drop of peppermint essential oil throughout the day. You may desire to brush your teeth more often during the detox phase too.
You may experience odd body odor as well. Keep drinking enough water to help your body release the toxins stored up from your previous diet. Exercise will help quicken this phase as well. Carry an essential oil that you enjoy and apply it a few times throughout the day to help you get through this phase.
Later this week I will share our menu for days 8-14. The children are loving each meal and embracing this diet change so well. I’m very proud of them. The hardest thing so far for them is losing Pancake Saturday for the month. I already found grain free pancake recipes and we will surely be using them next month!
