New Weekly Beauty Column – Beauty & Style with Jill

Welcome to a new weekly column here on my blog – you can look forward to a new Beauty & Style with Jill post each Thursday!

My friends have been asking me to start this column for a little over a year now.

I hope you enjoy this new column and are inspired to bring your closet back to life.  I made a conscious choice over a year ago, that the only time I would leave the house in sweats or anything that resembles them would be if I am sick or it is just too miserable to try and look cute (and maybe when my husband is traveling).  That decision began a resurrection of my love for fashion and creativity with classic/preppie styles.

Many of you already follow me on PinterestInside My Closet where I pin my favorite ensembles and looks to help inspire me to use all the clothes I own and to keep trying new ways of wearing them.

If you follow me on Instagram (Jill Samter), then you already know that I love to share my flare for fashion.

Ladies, let’s be honest it gets a little harder once you hit forty to find fashionable clothes that are both modest and trendy that are age appropriate.   Thus, the start of my new column.

Who wants to take a look inside my closet and update their look this year?

Well, here is a great place to start…my favorite outfits from 2014.

Spring – Summer 2014

Many of my outfits are from:   Loft, Francesca’s, Gap, Target, and Express

Favorite Style:  Polka-dots, Anchors, Bold Patterns, and Stripes

Fall and Winter 2014:

My outfits are from:  Gap, Loft, Target, and inspired by my Pin Board (Inside my Closet)

Favorite Style:  Bold and Solid Colored Sweaters, Cardigans, Polka-dots, Skinny Jeans, and Riding Boots

I love to accessorize with fun necklaces and as you can see pearls are often my go to choice, since they go with everything and are timeless.

My kids always comment how new all of my things look.  I remind them, “its because I take care of my things and every style comes back around 10 or so years later.”   Sometimes sooner right?   I tease our daughter who is a junior in college that all the styles she is wearing now and raves about, I wore when I was her age and none of it is “new”.   That often receives a serious eye roll.  HA!

Beauty and Style Tips:

#1 Go through your closet this week and anything that you have not worn in over a year gets put into a pile.  You will either give it away or put it into storage.  Try everything on and be honest about whether or not you will wear it this year (season) or if it looks good on you.  Decide if it goes into storage or needs to be given away to bless someone else.  If you pack it away and don’t miss it after another full season, then it is time to give it away.   Remember clothes that look old and worn are not going to make you feel the best.  Ladies, you can update your wardrobe with a few new pieces for a very small investment.  Don’t keep things that are truly ready to be thrown away or given away.

#2 The best way to truly utilize and maximize what you already own is to organize it so that you are able to see the things you love wearing.  Which means put all dresses, skirts, jeans, button downs, cardigans, jackets, and sweaters by style and color together, etc.

#3 If you are in a rut wearing the same things over and over again, it might be time to challenge yourself to clean out your closet (see tip #1) and put new ensembles together that you feel good in.  That is key!   ONLY keep and wear things that you truly feel look the best on you.   And if you are not good at knowing what REALLY looks good and the colors that are best on you, ask a friend whose fashion sense you admire and want to try to copy.  Or comment below and I will be happy to help you figure that out.

Each week I will share a few of my favorite outfits from the prior week, along with where I bought each item.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or need help putting items in your closet together, then comment and I will be happy to help you!  You don’t need new clothes either.  Most of my clothes are a few years old.  I add a few new classic pieces each season to give my wardrobe a little updated look and to add in new colors for that particular season.

I would love to see how you incorporate these looks and tips into your daily ensembles, so please tag me on Instagram using #fashion4over40 or #stylebyjill

Until next week, be sure to wear your best accessory a SMILE!
