TTT - The Purity Challenge

Purity; a topic that we hear about all the time, but seldom fully understand. Our minds tell us one thing, but God says something totally different on the matter. “But doesn’t the Bible tell us to be bored out of our brains, sit at home, and never ever have any fun?” No, we tell ourselves that, hence the dramatic attitude towards the topic of purity. The word turns people off and causes uncomfortable situations. But why is that? Why has purity been put down so low in this society that it actually makes people cringe when they hear it?

The reason: we live in a fallen and impure world. We see the effects of sin everywhere we go and the consequences we all face because of one man and woman’s choice in the Garden of Eden. In that beautiful garden, everything was 100% pure. Everything. The world was absolutely perfect, until Adam and Eve chose for themselves what looked good and ate the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Since then, this world’s vision of purity has become disfigured. The world defines being pure as similar to being weak and an ultimate looser. You’ll never have fun, you’ll never experience those fleshly “firsts”, and you’ll always be a freak. There you go; congratulations.

Being pure to the world means being different, and we all know that this world HATES people who are different because everybody wants to be just like everybody else. Purity is a rebellion against the flow, but I guess that’s what God has wanted all along. When we live the word purity, it shows we are different and are telling the world that we refuse to follow in its dark footsteps. We are showing the people around us that we are choosing to be the person God wants us to be, not the person the “popular” kids tell you to be. We are showing this generation that living a pure life actually gives you something worthwhile to live for, instead of wasting our young lives on things that don’t even matter. Once we take on the purity challenge, we are showing them that we want a change and that we CAN make it happen.

Purity doesn’t just mean choosing to wait for your future spouse.  Sure, that is a super important part to it, but it also has a lot of other sections to it. When we begin going through the topic of purity and all its characteristics, don’t look at them like rules, treat them like you would an urgent wake-up call. Challenge yourself and others to take on purity; you may be surprised with the results.

2 Timothy 2:22 says, “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

Purity isn’t just a word, it’s an attribute; a commandment. In 2 Timothy 2:22, God doesn’t say “with a pure heart” for no reason. If you have a pure heart, you will be loving, faithful, righteous, and peaceful. It’s not something you attain or earn, you already have it. God Himself lives inside of you! He is 100% pure, which enables you to be pure also, but it’s a choice. It’s a choice to say, “Yes! I am going to commit to purity and strive to have a pure heart that is sold out for God”. Besides giving your heart to Jesus, it’s the most important choice you could make…and it’s there for the taking. Are you up for the challenge?
